About the Event

https://www.wildembraceird.com/event-details/death-cafe-2

Death Café is an open-ended community-driven conversation to explore topics surrounding our mortality, together.

We'll do brief introductions, set some basic group norms to create a safe space for authentic sharing, and see what comes up as we meander through our ideas about death, grief, and whatever else arises through the evening. And we've got tea and cake!

The Death Café framework comes from Jon Underwood and Sue Barsky Reid's work with Impermanence, and is heavily influenced by the ideas of Bernard Crettaz. Lizzy Miles was the pioneer who brought this modality to the U.S. They built this framework to 'increase awareness of death, with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.'

This Death Café will be cofacilitated by Skunk Bouchard of Wild Embrace IRD and Megan Rank-Carmichael.

This event is free to attend. Donations welcome.

All are welcome, but there are some limitations that may make this difficult for some to attend:

-The venue is not wheelchair accessible. There are stairs up to the meeting room and down to the bathroom. We hope to host Death Café at more accessible locations, and will consider remote attendance in the future.

-While any form of sharing and language are welcome, we anticipate that this will be attended primarily by English speakers. We do not have interpreters on hand, but if you would like one, please contact us at WildEmbraceIRD@gmail.com and we'll see if we can pull something together.

-All ages are welcome. Due to the nature of the topic, some big feelings and hard subjects can arise. Children may attend with a caregiver; caregivers are expected to attend to the needs of their children. Wild Embrace IRD has some family-oriented death related programming in the works - this may be a more suitable alternative for children.

The venue: The Burlington Odd Fellows are a fraternal order dedicated to mutual aid and community building. They are home to the North End Food Pantry, which serves over 600 community members per month. The lodge is located at 1416 North Avenue, Burlington, VT 05408. This event will take place in the event hall upstairs. Bathrooms are available downstairs. While one of the facilitators is a member, this Death Café is not an Odd Fellows event. Please contact WildEmbraceIRD@gmail.com with any questions, concerns, accessibility needs, etc.

Parking: Limited parking is available on site. Ample street parking is available on Staniford Road, Edgemoor Drive, and other neighborhood side streets.
